A Brief Introduction To The English County Of East Sussex

East Sussex

East Sussex, in the South East of England is an immensely popular destination for vacations and extended breaks. Diverse vacations can be enjoyed ranging from rambling in the South Downs to seaside vacations. East Sussex really does offer an amazing range of vacation opportunities.

Many visitors to England enjoy a trip to the seaside and the southern part of the county of East Sussex features an extensive stretch of coastline, where you will find towns such as Eastbourne, Bexhill-on-Sea, Brighton & Hove and Hastings.

The most popular East Sussex seaside resort is Brighton & Hove, the largest settlement by the seaside in the United Kingdom. Prior to the 18 th Century Brighton was little more than an insignificant fishing village however in about 1750 a local physician began to recommend that his patients should drink and bathe in seawater for their health, saying that the water at Brighton was the best. A few years later, in seventeen eighty, Georgian terraces where being built and the Brighton tourism industry had been born.

Tourism received a boost following a visit by the Prince Regent (later King George IV)in in the year seventeen eighty three and again , in 1841, when the railway arrived( delivering huge numbers of day-trippers from the surrounding area and beyond). Nowadays the city gets approximately 8 million visitors a year and at times it appears that you can hardly move for Brighton bed and breakfasts and tourists.

Eastbourne is another popular East Sussex seaside town. Situated at the east end of the South Downs, it is one of the sunniest towns in Great Britain. Eastbourne’s main industry is tourism and it has the expected pier as well as many other visitor attractions such as a beach (shingle), museums, four theatres and numerous parks & gardens, as well as a bandstand. Luckily it is easy to find cheap B & B, at the least somewhat more affordable than many bed & breakfasts in Brighton .

As well as the 2 popular seaside resorts introduced above, East Sussex also has the slightly less popular, but very beautiful, seaside towns of Bexhill-on-Sea, Hastings and Rye, and countless towns of interest inland such as the former market towns of Hailsham, Uckfield and Heathfield. A further fascinating town in East Sussex definitely worth a visit is  Crowborough in the Ashdown Forest, also the county town of Lewes and Battle as well as many others.
