If your young or just want to spend a full season skiing without breaking the bank then considering a seasonal job in a ski resort is a great way to get full holiday whilst still earning enough to live on. A first season away is always a rewarding experience and great fun but be warned you will be shattered on a constant basis with work and partying being the key activities of every day. Generally you will be expected to work long hours for little pay but the location and outdoor opportunities should more than make up for this. What work is available?

There are plenty of free things to do on the boat that do not require money.  But there are also some restaurants that will charge an extra fee.  Just stick to the main dining rooms, buffets, and other cafes that offer free food and drinks to save some money.  The quality of food on most cruise ships is excellent so you will not have a hard time finding something tasty to eat.

Sail during the off season.  Cruise rates are much cheaper when you go during hurricane season.  Yes, you run the risk of having a cruise during a hurricane but if the cruise is canceled you will get your money back, and usually cruise ships sail out of the way of any storms even if they have to change your itinerary and visit different islands.  In my opinion it’s well worth it to save hundreds of dollars on the cost of your cruise, and with the money you save you can go on two cruises.

Book your cruise well in advance.  Some cruise lines like Carnival offer steep discounts for people who are willing to book their cruises 6 months and more in advance.  And the great part is that these cruises come with the ability to change your cruise date for $50 if that particular date does not work out.  After all, it’s hard to know what life will be like 6 months plus from now.

There are many ways to save money on your cruise, and there is really no other vacation that will allow you to see different islands without you having to anything but relax and eat in luxury.

Late in 2010 the Government passed a bill to increase university tuition fees to up to £9000 per year. Not only is this a huge increase from the current £3000 but to add insult to injury, young people are not getting jobs upon graduation. For many jobs there are over 1000 applicants chasing just one place, plus we should note, wages are not rising with inflation.

Whilst for many university is a good idea, the only route into the career they want, for others it is becoming less important. Life skills are once more being viewed as valuable. So how do you get these ‘life skills’ if you can’t actually get a job in the first place? One answer is to take a gap year.

We’re not talking sunning yourself on a Thai beach for six months or ‘pub crawling’ your way along the Australian East Coast. A well-planned, structured gap year, even if it doesn’t include volunteering is a great way to not only grow up and take responsibility for yourself, but you will learn many valuable skills along the way. If you need some inspiration, here are two ideas that you could put into practice.

Ski or snowboard instructor

This may require some initial investment, but if you do your research you don’t need to pay several thousand Pounds for a 12-week instructor course in Les Deux Alpes. There are ski and snowboard schools in Austria, France and Switzerland that cater to English speakers and you can get qualified in under two weeks.

Once you begin instructing you’ll actually be earning. You will meet new people everyday. You will have to be responsible for large groups of people, be great at organising, team leading and time keeping… see where we are going with this? Plus you can also learn a language while you’re at it, not to mention you’ll have a lot of fun along the way.

Volunteering

Working for free always looks good on your C.V. if not on your bank statement. You can learn valuable skills and you can often work within the industry you later want to work, on a paid basis, in. For example, you could work on a radio station in Kenya, teach children in English in Cambodia or protect endangered wildlife in Costa Rica. Look for placements that allow you to have your fingers in lots of different pies and don’t pay several thousand Pounds to volunteer for a large organisation.
