20 Tips on How To Find Last Minute Travel Deals

If you want to get your hands on great last minute vacation deals, you don’t need to leave your home. All you need is to be logged on to the internet. All the information you want is right there. To help you get the last minute travel deal of a lifetime, we’ve put together 20 great tips here.

1. Always check with the Federal Trade Commission if your travel agent or carrier is on the level or not. You don’t want to buy a fabulous last minute vacation deal only to discover you bought it from a bankrupt or non-existent travel agency.

2. Sometimes airlines offer great last minute vacation deals. Make it a point to check directly with the websites of different airlines that fly out of nearby airports. Some airlines put up their last minute deals only on their websites and not with their agents.

3. Several international and regional carriers offer last minute vacation deals as well. Check all carriers that service your local airports as well as their travel agencies for last minute deals.

4. Flights that take off from airports that are at a distance from you work out cheaper. Insisting on a nearby airport actually adds to the cost.

5. Discuss last minute deals and how to get your hands on them with your local travel agent. Inform your travel agent about your upcoming travel plans, what climate you prefer, which countries you plan to travel to and so on. Your agent will be able to offer a list of last minute travel deals either from the agency or from airlines.

6. Don’t restrict your last minute travel deal homework with just one travel agent. Always check with different travel agents and explore more options. Don’t jump at the first good deal you get.

7. Find out what times of the year are considered off-peak travel times for your preferred destinations. This way, you can obtain great discounts on last minute travel deals.

8. Obtain memberships at travel clubs; many of these clubs are devoted to last minute travel deals. You’ll meet people who’ve traveled all over the world; listening to the deals they’ve discovered will give you more ideas.

9. Travel agents usually have access to discounted tickets that might not be available to the general public. Make it a point to ask for these tickets, especially a few days before departure. Agents are expected to sell all tickets at least a few days before departure.

10. Opt to travel in the middle of the week to get good last minute deals.

11. If you are savvy about airline ticket prices, you can play around with sites such as PriceLine.com and SkyAuction.com. Create a budget trip and bid on the price. Use Expedia.com to view a comparison chart of all the rates for different carriers and bid accordingly.

12. Don’t book so called last minute deal promotions. Some sites repeat the same deals over and over with little actual savings. Monitor the prices for a few weeks before booking.

13. Airlines are highly competitive and all of them are in the business of trying to outdo each other. All major airlines offer internet fares at a discount. The idea is to drive customers online where booking is cheaper for the airline. They don’t have to pay agency commission when you book online. Take full advantage of this policy.

14. Subscribe to daily or weekly email lists to get news of the best last minute travel deals. Subscribe to lists on TravelZoo.com and Last-Minute-Vacation-Guide.com for starters.

15. If you want cheap, or even free travel, you can consider traveling on a courier’s schedule. The downside is that you won’t get much notice before you are required to travel and you won’t have luggage space. The courier company will use your luggage space for courier packages. You also might not get a round trip ticket. If you’re still interested, try Courier.org, the International Association of Air Travel Couriers’ website.

16. Check for great deals for flights just 21 days before departure date. The best rates are available at this point.

17. Use Bing Travel, a predictive travel site to understand whether you should book flights immediately or wait for a bit. While you’re at it, check Kayak.com to view fare history graphs to know when flight rates dip.

18. Passengers cancel their seats or change flight plans at the last minute. These seats become available and you can get this information directly from the airlines or from the agents. Airlines often sell these extra seats at fantastic prices. Always check on last minute cancellations. The only thing you need to do is be packed and be ready to leave at short notice.

19. Some airlines reserve a few seats for their staff; these are available subject-to-load. If the staff members who’ve booked these seats cancel their plans, these seats will go empty. Always check for subject-to-load seats just a couple of hours before departure time. You might get lucky and get a seat for next to nothing.

20. Be flexible when you’re booking a last minute deal. You might be required to leave on any date and return on any date. Be prepared to travel even a day earlier or return a day later to get the best rates. Special deals for odd days are available on sites such as Travelocity.com, Kayak.com and Orbitz.com.

What Medical Tourism in Europe Has to Offer

Medical tourism, the practice of visiting a foreign country to obtain cost-effective medical care, is increasing in popularity as the cost of health care rises in many countries. While medical tourism destinations are available worldwide, many people choose European destinations for the high percentage of English-speaking physicians and other personnel, the excellent and highly regulated quality of care, and destination-specific amenities and cultural flavour. While procedures performed in these countries may be more expensive than those performed in South America or India, the quality and oversight are greater as well, offering patients a safer, more comfortable experience on average.

Germany medical tourism
For those looking for a country where a lot of different surgical procedures are performed as part of medical tourism offerings, Germany may be the destination of choice. Centrally located and a popular destination for tourists looking for culture, history and cuisine, Germany is an excellent destination for those intending to combine both the medical aspects and tourism aspects to their fullest. Each year, an average of fifty thousand medical tourists, many from the US, visit Germany for its variety and quality of medical services, including joint replacement surgeries and other serious procedures.

Cheaper alternatives in Europe
For people seeking lower-cost dentistry options, such as dental implants or smile rehabilitation, the Eastern European county of Romania, a relative newcomer to medical tourism, caters to those needs. In the United States, the costs of cosmetic dentistry have skyrocketed, with implants costing well over $50,000 for the complete replacement of upper or lower teeth. Medical tourism in Romania offers a substantial discount, plus a visit to one of Europe’s up and coming travel destinations. Similarly, the country of Hungary offers dental and cosmetic services to its guest at substantial savings of up to 50% in some cases or for some popular procedures.
Another newer destination, the beautiful Czech Republic, offers dental services similar to those of Romania and Hungary, but with tourism options long enjoyed by visiting Americans and Western European travellers. The city of Prague is one popular destination in this picturesque Central European country.

Destinations for complex procedures
For surgeries that require extreme skill, including kidney transplants and heart bypass surgery, Belgium is a destination of choice. Known throughout Europe for its high standards of care and its status as a frontrunner in medical technology, Belgium is a popular medical destination for citizens of neighbouring countries, including the Netherlands and France. Many from these countries also visit Belgium for relatively inexpensive treatment. Located in Western Europe, Belgium offers easy access to other popular tourist destinations, particularly the French countryside and Paris by rail.

Spain medical tourism
The most popular medical tourism destination in Europe, however, is the Iberian country of Spain, known for its unrivalled health care access and lower costs. Europeans offer immigrate here for elder care, including treatment for chronic conditions associated with aging as well as hip replacement surgery and coronary bypasses. Others come to Spain to avail themselves of cosmetic or obesity surgery. Dental procedures are readily available here too. Additionally, Spain offers the ideal environment for recovery, including warm temperatures, sandy beaches, and many low-intensity cultural attractions, such as the art museums of Barcelona.

For those wishing to combine travel and receiving quality services, medical tourism in Europe offers a unique solution to their needs, through their less expensive, yet safe and comfortable health care system.

Working in the Ski Industry

If your young or just want to spend a full season skiing without breaking the bank then considering a seasonal job in a ski resort is a great way to get full holiday whilst still earning enough to live on. A first season away is always a rewarding experience and great fun but be warned you will be shattered on a constant basis with work and partying being the key activities of every day. Generally you will be expected to work long hours for little pay but the location and outdoor opportunities should more than make up for this. In this article we’re going to look at some of the opportunities available and give some advice on the best way to get work and what to do when you’re there. Don’t forget your skis and ski insurance and check whether you get a season pass included in your remuneration package.

What work is available?

There are huge numbers of opportunities available in the area and what to go for will entirely depend on your skill set. The most common work is in hotels and chalets as a cleaner, caterer or just as a rep. Being a tour rep is one of the most commonly available opportunities for working the season but it is gruelling work with a lot to do and you will frequently lose out on sleep. The work involves looking after visitors, liaising with locals and sorting out problems. If you want to be an instructor then you will need existing qualifications though you can get one while you are there through a variety of companies. This is possibly the best job you can get in a ski resort and if you have the skills well worth doing.

Where to find jobs

The hardest obstacle to finding jobs is the language barrier inherent in European countries where the majority of seasonal work is available. If you have language skills then you can go direct to the operators and hotels which is a very good way to find work. If you are bilingual or close to then you can almost guarantee finding work. If not then the internet is your best bet with a whole host of sites offering job listings for seasonal workers. If you can’t find work through one of the online hirers then direct emails to hotels and tour operators is a good way to go.

What to put in your CV

Your CV will be a huge deciding factor in your ability to gain employment so choosing the correct things to flag up is crucial. Depending on the job you are going for you want to tailor your CV to what employers most want. If you are applying for rep positions then language and organisational skills are paramount. If you want to be a ski instructor then your qualifications are most important. Most of all these positions will be looking for people with personality. This might seem odd but the strenuous nature of the work and the frequent need for customer service interaction need strong and happy personalities. Finally make sure you outline your existing experience and knowledge of the area and specific resort if applicable.

Preparation

Finally if you manage to procure a job you need to make sure you are fully prepared. Physical fitness is a very good place to start as the work is gruelling and you want to be fit enough to still ski on your days off. Secondly make sure your work papers are in order (if you need them) and that you have all your documents with you especially ski passes and ski insurance. Finally if possible it is a good idea to have some money saved as backup in case anything goes awry. Whatever you managed to find remember to have fun and don’t party all night every night or you’ll quickly burn out.

Tips for Saving Money on a Cruise Vacation

Cruises are great for those who want a relaxed vacation and don’t want to worry about where they are going to eat or sleep.  These floating resorts offer fun entertainment, exquisite food, and a variety of places to see.   But many think that cruises must be expensive and therefore never even look at the amazing deals that can be found online.

But the price you see online is not the final price you will pay.  A cruise vacation has a few little fees that come with it, and most cruise lines only show the prices per person.  If you are traveling with your spouse you will need to double that figure and then add taxes and fees to get your final price.  Once you are on the cruise ship there are several things you can do to help save money though, and here are some tips to cruise on a budget.

First, before you even sail, you should see if the rate of your cruise has dropped at all.  There are some cruise lines like Carnival that will give you on board credit for every dollar that the cruise price has dropped.  This is not automatic though, and you need to check the website every day to see if prices have changed.  These price bounces can all happen in one day, so it’s easy to miss.

There are plenty of free things to do on the boat that do not require money.  But there are also some restaurants that will charge an extra fee.  Just stick to the main dining rooms, buffets, and other cafes that offer free food and drinks to save some money.  The quality of food on most cruise ships is excellent so you will not have a hard time finding something tasty to eat.

Carnival Spirit - Lido Buffet Seating

Bring some empty water bottles.  If you want to drink soda or alcohol on the cruise ship you will have to spend extra money.  But the water that comes out of your sink in your stateroom is just as clean if not cleaner than the water you can find from water bottle companies.  This is because the cruise ship uses advanced methods for filtering their water and it’s excellent to drink.  By bringing some empty water bottles you can drink this water all over the ship and even bring it ashore at the different ports.

Sail during the off season.  Cruise rates are much cheaper when you go during hurricane season.  Yes, you run the risk of having a cruise during a hurricane but if the cruise is canceled you will get your money back, and usually cruise ships sail out of the way of any storms even if they have to change your itinerary and visit different islands.  In my opinion it’s well worth it to save hundreds of dollars on the cost of your cruise, and with the money you save you can go on two cruises.

Book your cruise well in advance.  Some cruise lines like Carnival offer steep discounts for people who are willing to book their cruises 6 months and more in advance.  And the great part is that these cruises come with the ability to change your cruise date for $50 if that particular date does not work out.  After all, it’s hard to know what life will be like 6 months plus from now.

There are many ways to save money on your cruise, and there is really no other vacation that will allow you to see different islands without you having to anything but relax and eat in luxury.

It also pays to bring items such as a torch, some rope, insect repellant, a two radio, and any other items you think will make the trip more enjoyable.

One thing is certain, if you forget to bring a first aid kit, you could be tempting fate which is not a good idea. Aside from the first aid kit, Forgetting to take along any one of the other essential camping items could be a recipe for disaster and could even become life-threatening.

Structured gap years

Late in 2010 the Government passed a bill to increase university tuition fees to up to £9000 per year. Not only is this a huge increase from the current £3000 but to add insult to injury, young people are not getting jobs upon graduation. For many jobs there are over 1000 applicants chasing just one place, plus we should note, wages are not rising with inflation.

Whilst for many university is a good idea, the only route into the career they want, for others it is becoming less important. Life skills are once more being viewed as valuable. So how do you get these ‘life skills’ if you can’t actually get a job in the first place? One answer is to take a gap year.

We’re not talking sunning yourself on a Thai beach for six months or ‘pub crawling’ your way along the Australian East Coast. A well-planned, structured gap year, even if it doesn’t include volunteering is a great way to not only grow up and take responsibility for yourself, but you will learn many valuable skills along the way. If you need some inspiration, here are two ideas that you could put into practice.

Ski or snowboard instructor

This may require some initial investment, but if you do your research you don’t need to pay several thousand Pounds for a 12-week instructor course in Les Deux Alpes. There are ski and snowboard schools in Austria, France and Switzerland that cater to English speakers and you can get qualified in under two weeks.

Once you begin instructing you’ll actually be earning. You will meet new people everyday. You will have to be responsible for large groups of people, be great at organising, team leading and time keeping… see where we are going with this? Plus you can also learn a language while you’re at it, not to mention you’ll have a lot of fun along the way.

Volunteering

Working for free always looks good on your C.V. if not on your bank statement. You can learn valuable skills and you can often work within the industry you later want to work, on a paid basis, in. For example, you could work on a radio station in Kenya, teach children in English in Cambodia or protect endangered wildlife in Costa Rica. Look for placements that allow you to have your fingers in lots of different pies and don’t pay several thousand Pounds to volunteer for a large organisation.

To help you on your way, literally, check our the range of round the world trip options from Round the World Experts.

Para-Gliding Experience

paraglidingAges ago, when mountaineers found it tricky and unsafe to descend from their climbs by gliding off of the hillside, only using a steerable parachute, they needed to create a  lighter, more secure and far better gliders. Their invention ended up being named para-gliders or paragliders.

The initial things you will notice in regards to a Paraglider is actually the look of it. Somewhat just like a sports parachute. This doesn’t have features like a skydivers chute in which you may pull their rip-cord right after diving away from a airplane, and the chute opens, at times with a smoke flare, just to make it look more attractive. A paraglider is actually filled even before the actual flight, as opposed to the sports parachutes.

The paragliders which are used now came from the wonders of aeronautical engineers within cloth and lines which are secure and simple to operate. It consists of 30 or more cells between an upper and a lower sail surface area, which is sometimes called the canopy. To keep the wing inflated through the flight, the cells tend to be wide open at the front to allow the air to flow inside.

When heading out, the initial stage is to fill your wing. As soon as you spread your wing on the hillside or even the wide area behind you, ensure that your wing will approach the wind. Once that’s done, begin yanking on your A-risers, that are linked closest to the front edge of the wing.
After some guidelines of learn to get your wing stuffed with air and leaping up in the air flow, next thing to do is to kite your wing up. Yes, like the way you would fly a kite. You confront the breeze; hold the braking mechanism toggles getting close to the wind until you’re up!

Once you choose, all you should do is drift a little to the left, so you can pull down the toggle in your right with only a tad. Shortly, you are gliding down. Just be sure to never land on any golf course where there can be golfers around, or horses running around. Pick a clear spot. As you get closer to the ground, you pull down firmly on toggles so you can land at a gentle drop and walking pace to the ground. Your wing deflates behind you and flutters down. You have to pull it in to a bundle and start once again for round two. It would take you much practice to master your take offs and landings.  Best of all, you’ve liked the ride.
