Birmingham is a lively city in the English county of the West Midlands and it is an incredibly popular destination for vacations and day trips. The city features a great selection of world class tourist attractions including many churches which have Grade I status and historic houses as well as many museums and galleries, including the Ikon Gallery Birmingham UK.
The Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, England, is an art gallery specialising in contemporary art which is housed in the former Oozells Street Board School, Brindleyplace, however it wasn’t always in such surroundings.
The gallery was founded in 1964 by four students of art and Angus Skene. The 4 artists were; Robert Groves, Jesse Bruton, Sylvani Merilion and Robert Groves. Angus Skene had acquired one of Prentice’s works of art and the two of them talked about the numerous problems faced by local artists, including the dire lack of general support for local artists. The conversation ultimately led to the creation of Ikon which was to be a "gallery without walls".
Angus Skene initially financed the project, which consisted of exhibitions in such unusual locations as cinemas and post offices in a motorcycle sidecar. The idea being to allow the general public more access to art. To reduce overheads staffing was by the family, friends and the founding artists who did not charge. Later the Gallery obtained a glass walled stall in the famous Bull Ring shopping centre.
For almost two decades the Ikon Gallery moved from location to location until 1997 when it bought, with help from the National Lottery Fund, the current premises, the former Oozells Street Board School. In the last few years the Ikon Gallery has held a selection of exhibitions and its continuous ability to produce the superb has led it to become surprisingly popular, to such a degree that it opened another gallery in 2006, the Ikon Eastside in Digbeth.
If you are considering a vacation in the city of Birmingham remember to visit at least one of the Ikon Galleries. Also it is important to know that although there are many hotels and guest houses in Birmingham finding Birmingham bed and breakfast can at times be rather difficult.
