South Uist Vacations And Some Handy Information

South Uist is found in the group of islands known as the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The main inhabited islands are Isle of Lewis, South Uist, North Uist, Isle of Harris, Barra, Benbecula and Eriskay plus a great many islands which are only inhabited by wildlife and livestock. In the following article I talk about the island of South Uist and describe why this is such a great place to visit, plus I introduce some hotels on South Uist.

Polochar_Inn_South_Uist The Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) are unique, they have totally unique types of flora and fauna in a breathtaking countryside with some of the most beautiful beaches, coves and inlets in the UK. The Hebridean culture is a complex blend of Celtic, Norse and Gaelic influences, which could also be said to be somewhat unique.

On South Uist, particularly in the western parts, you will find the most amazing beaches of sand and behind these large areas of land known as machair. Machair is unique to this part of the world, it is a kind of incredibly fertile, meadow which is blanketed in wildflowers during spring and summer. Many folk believe that South Uist beaches are the best in the country, the United Kingdom, and possibly Europe.

South Uist is also an incredible place to enjoy golf. Askernish Golf Course is the oldest Outer Hebrides golf course and it was designed by the famous Old Tom Morris (the designer of the Old Course at St. Andrews) and numerous others in the country. Unfortunately the course was damaged and it desperately needs restoring before it can be played upon but you will find many other places to play golf across the islands.

Obviously the island of South Uist features plenty of opportunities to indulge in a diverse range of sports. Water sports such as surfing are immensely popular and nearly everyone can enjoy a spot of walking. Besides golf the most popular sport remains fishing though increasing numbers of cyclists appear every year.

Although the island does not feature a splendid list of galleries and museums it has sufficient to keep you busy if it rains. Places such as Kildonan Museum focus upon the islands history and its association with Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald.
